Mary Dettmer, 75, died March 2, 2022, at KU Medical Center. She is survived by her beloved husband, Gary, their 5 children and 9 grandchildren.
She was born September 23, 1946, and grew up in Westmoreland, KS to John and Ethel Brookens. She attended Kansas University nursing school and worked in various venues as a registered nurse for 35 years, most enjoyably in postpartum recovery at KU Medical Center and later as a lactation consultant.
Her love of children led her and her husband to be foster parents to 44 children over 18 years. She was an advocate for children in multiple capacities throughout the Shawnee Mission School District and was a lifetime member of the Kansas Congress of Parents and Teachers. She was a trustee at Old Mission United Methodist Church where she was proud of her work to organize and fund the replacement of the chapel doors.
She was a renowned cook; she studied hospitality management, held a highly anticipated black-eyed pea party for New Year’s Day, and catered many church dinners.
Memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 12th at 2:00 pm at Old Mission United Methodist Church, Fairway, KS. Masks are mandatory. Please wear bright clothing.
