Mary Elizabeth Engelken

May 13, 1935 — August 30, 2021

Mary E. Meyer Engelken, 86, of Prairie Village, KS passed away Monday, August 30, 2021 at her home in Westchester Village. Mary was born on May 13, 1935 at Kelly (Seneca), KS to Susie Wichman Meyer and Frank J. Meyer. She attended St. Peter and Paul Grade and High Schools at Seneca, graduating as valedictorian in 1953. On September 12, 1953, she was married to Rene D. Engelken.


She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Frank H. Meyer, Jr.; sisters, Thelma Ann Schmelzle and Irene Rose Heinen. She is survived by her husband, Rene Engelken; and her children, Sheri Engelken (Dan Fratini), Richard Engelken (Lee Anne), Barbara Montoia (Ted), Bradley Engelken (Lynette), William Engelken (Lisa), former son-in-law Rodney Starkey. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Erin Montoia DeHaven (Max), Samantha Montoia Herrington (Will), Emmett Starkey (America), Lauren Engelken (Spencer Knipper), Kyle Engelken, Dominic Montoia, Ingrid Starkey, Jenna Engelken Beck (David), Mason Engelken, Zak Engelken, Samuel Engelken, Nora Engelken, and two step granddaughters, Amber Brock (Brian) and Aurora Murtey (Abaz Toda), along with six great grandsons, Ethan, Evan and Eric Brock, Greyson Knipper, Shay Murtey, Manny DeHaven and great granddaughters, Stella Gregson, Josie Beck, Eloise Knipper.
Mary is also survived by siblings, Lester Meyer and Loyola Engelken (Virgil), her husband’s sisters and brothers, and many nieces and nephews and their families.


Mary greatly enjoyed her children, but this enjoyment was surpassed by her love for her grandchildren. She treasured the Dinner Group, her close friends and her neighbors. Her passion was gardening and sharing plants with others. She enjoyed each day of her life and was very appreciative of the support and prayers of every one of every faith, and especially grateful for all those who took her to her many appointments. After her retirement from Mercantile Bank, now U.S. Bank, Mary became an ardent volunteer for 15 years for women who had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She treasured the time spent at Roeland Park Community Center, where she volunteered and exercised, making many close friends.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Ann Food Kitchen, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas Food Pantry or Cancer Action. Mary will be laid to rest in a private family service at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS.
