Mary Louise (Mangner) Hewlett, 72, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, November 3, 2023, due to complications with lung cancer.
Mary, also known as “Mary Lou'' when growing up, was born April 13, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska to Thomas and Jeanne (Vyvyan) Mangner. She was the second eldest of five children.
Growing up she moved about every 16-18 months as her father served in the the United States Air Force and was constantly getting new assignments. This allowed her to live in various places around the world such as Germany, Japan, and Tripoli, Libya. Her family then settled in Shiloh, Illinois. There she attended O'Fallon Township High School and graduated in 1970, and last year attended her 50-year class reunion.
After graduation, her family moved to Grandview, Missouri, but she remained in Illinois to finish data processing school where she learned punched card data processing. After finishing school she then moved to Grandview to be with her family. There she got a job working nights at AT&T.
Mary had various jobs throughout her life, one of which is where she met her now husband “Steve,” Grover Steven Hewlett, and they later married in 1981. She and Steve lived in North Kansas City for about three years before moving to Shawnee, Kansas where they built their first home, and where she and Steve resided upon her death.
Mary raised two children that she loved immensely. She was always attending their various activities growing up and was always there to support them.
Things she loved, besides her family of course; watching TV shows, shopping, playing games, taking afternoon naps and Coca-Cola, which she always drank. Mary also enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren which gave her such joy. She also loved being around people and was very outgoing, making friends wherever she went and could hold a conversation with just about anyone.
If you knew Mary, you also knew how stubborn she was, which helped her overcome challenges in her life, such as battling breast cancer, not once, but twice. She also never gave up on those she cared for, always reaching out to make sure they were doing okay. Mary was a kind and caring person, oftentimes sacrificing her own needs to help or accommodate others. If you ever needed someone to talk to, she was always there to lend a listening ear and give advice.
During her time here on earth, she showed others her loving and caring spirit that will always be remembered by those she interacted with.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Steve, two children; Steven “Stevie” Hewlett of Shawnee, KS, and Kristen Hewlett (Nick Shamet), of Lenexa, KS, six grandchildren; Taylor, Ezra, Nehemiah, Nicaiah, Hezekiah, and Lauren. Her siblings; Patrick and Judy (Butler) Mangner, Mike Mangner, Kate (Mangner) and Mike Dimmit, T.J. and Christi (Rainey) Mangner.
A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, on Saturday, November 11th at the Amos Family Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City, Inc.
