Mary Marcella McCarthy, 93, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021 at Brookdale-Shawnee Memory Care Community in Shawnee, KS.
Mary (also known to family and friends as "Cella" or "Marcie") was born May 4, 1927 to the late David J. Scollard and the late Noriel Scollard (ne Crough) in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She remained a proud Canadian until her passing. She was one of eight siblings (the late (Michael) Alphonse Scollard, the late (Mary) Loretta Leger, the late Regina Teresa ("Jeanna") Hurley, the late Rita Bernadette Beauchesne, the late John Vincent ("Jay") Scollard, the late Father (William) Joseph Scollard, C.R., and (David) Gerald Scollard of Guelph, Ontario).
Mary graduated from Brantford Collegiate Institute, Brantford, Ontario, in 1945. She then worked for the former G.F. Stearns & Company, Brantford, for a number of years until she married Vincent T. ("VT") McCarthy in May, 1952. The couple then lived in Stratford, Ontario, followed by London, Ontario, where they began their family. Her oldest son, Paul Vincent, was born in London in 1953 (now of Seattle, WA). Their second son, Kevin Joseph (Julie), was born in Wallaceburg, Ontario in 1956 (now of Brownsburg, IN), and their third son, Philip Edward (Susan), was born in London, Ontario in 1960 (now of Shawnee, KS).
The family soon thereafter moved to Toronto, Ontario, then in 1963 relocated to Columbus, OH, followed by Chicago, IL, Des Moines, IA, then to Leawood, KS, all as a result of former husband VT's corporate-related transfers.
Mary enjoyed and was very content being a mother, homemaker, and, later, grandmother to and for her family. She babysat for her beloved granddaughter, Katelyn Marie ("Katie") McCarthy, and beloved grandson, Derek Vincent McCarthy, during their infant, toddler, and pre-school years. She also very much enjoyed visits from her other granddaughter, Alyssa McCarthy (now of Phoenix, AZ).
Mary was particularly fond of her niece, Kathryn ("Kathy") Meyer (ne Leger), and Kathy's husband, Jim Meyer, of Olathe, KS. Over the years they were very kind to her and provided her with valued friendship and company.
Mary also valued highly and enjoyed her longstanding friendships with Betty Ulrich of Leawood, KS and with Susan Hansen of Kansas City, MO. Both Betty and Sue were very kind to her over many years and she was very appreciative of all they did for her.
Everything Mary did for her family she did from love. She lived a faith-filled life.
There will be no visitation hours. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Drive (3 blocks west of Nieman Road at Flint St.; Phone: (913) 631-5983), Shawnee, KS 66203.
