Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Nail, age 86, passed away on August 9, 2018, at Santa Marta Retirement Community's Skilled Nursing unit in Olathe, Kansas. She was born on March 30, 1932 to Frank and Mary (Galvin) Smith in Kansas City, Kansas. She married Vernon Nail on February 3, 1951 in Kansas City, Kansas and they were blessed with 67 years of marriage.

Mary is survived by her husband Vernon; daughter Kathy (George) Dobbelaere of Shawnee, KS; son Steve Nail of Amarillo, TX, and daughter Rita (Jim) Hayes of Blue Springs, MO. She leaves four grand-children, Tanya (Rob) Burdiss of Shawnee, KS; Gabe (Annie) Dobbelaere of Shawnee, KS; Laura Hayes of Overland Park, KS and Katie Hayes of Chicago, IL; seven great-grandchildren, and a brother Robert (Rosie) Smith of Overland Park, KS.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold Smith, and sisters Gerry Shubaugh, Katheryn McCabe, Margaret Schrader, Sister Collette Smith, OSB and Sister Rita Smith, OSB.

Mary was a member of Church of the Ascension Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family unconditionally. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, shopping, decorating and working in her garden. She was an avid KU Basketball fan along with her husband Vernon. Her family offers a special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Santa Marta and Catholic Community Hospice.

Visitation and Services

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday August 17, 2018 from 10:00-11:00am at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 9510 W 127th Street, Overland Park, KS 66213. Funeral visitation will take place from 9:00-10:00 am prior to the Mass. All are invited to a lunch in the church hall after the service. A private burial will take place later.
