Maurice "Mac" D. McMullen, an inspiring and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully from natural causes on March 4, 2025, in Merriam, Kansas, at the age of 94. Born in Orrick, Missouri, on September 19, 1930, Maurice led a remarkable life filled with dedication, love, and service.
Mac's journey began in Orrick, but his life's work took him far beyond those early roots. After serving as a drill instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps, he pursued a career in architecture, which became his lifelong passion. His extraordinary talent and leadership shone brightly as the president and partner at Black and Veatch. During this time, he also served as president of two additional firms, (Horner & Blessing and Marshall & Brown) as they were absorbed into Black and Veatch.
A man of deep faith and commitment, Mac attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. He held memberships in the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, American Institute of Architects and Lake Quivira, organizations that reflected his values and professional excellence.
Mac's interests were as varied as they were meaningful. He had a devotion to his faith and family, a vibrant love for travel, and a spirited enthusiasm for the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State University sports teams.
Maurice was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Cecil R. McMullen and Laura Bell (Dudgeon) McMullen. He is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Dorothy May (Scott) McMullen. His legacy continues through his loving family, including three daughters: Kim Mead (Eric), Karyl Elliott (Scott), and Kendra LeCluyse (Bill); and two sons: David McMullen (Sandy) and Brandon McMullen (Dianne). He was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren
Services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, March 11, with a Rosary at 9:30, visitation from 9:45 to 10:45, and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
