Melvin A. May

Melvin A. May, 78, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away September 30, 2013.

He was born in Wichita, Kansas, on January 25, 1935, to William and Ruth (Pratt) May. He served in the US Army/Air force during the Korean War. Because of Mel's outgoing personality he enjoyed writing and performing many skits and comedies while in the service.

Mel was united in marriage to his wife of 54 years, Marion Kay (Smith) May on February 28, 1959.

Mel founded Olathe Glass in the early 1970s and worked General Motors. He enjoyed participating in the Masonic lodge, Scottish Rite, and Abdallah Shrine. He was a member of the Abdallah Firewagon group and Abdallah Clowns. Mel also enjoyed clowning as Mel-O the Clown and performed at many birthday parties and gatherings. He was also a proud member of the Olathe American Legion Post #153 and the VFW.

Mel loved his family, friends, football, college basketball, watching birds, his dogs Duke and Annie, kisses, watching Marissa dance, buying treats and gifts for his grandchildren, shopping trips and school rides with Lauren and Kelli, macaroni and cheese, and Kentucky fried chicken.

He is survived by his wife Marion Kay May of Aberdeen Village in Olathe; daughters, Terri Hitt and husband Dennis, Shawnee, Kansas, Brenda Miller and husband Todd, Olathe, Kansas; son, Fred May, Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Brandon Hitt, Kelli Williams, Lauren Williams, and Marissa Hitt; one great-grandchild Brayden Hitt; sister Millie Parrish (Wichita); sisters-in-law; Marvel May, Cindy Shields, and Karen Smith; as well as various other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Jaime Hitt, two sisters, and two brothers.

Visitation and Funeral Service

A visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Shawnee, Kansas.

Memorial Contributions

Contributions in memory of Mel may be made to Grace Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association, Heart of America Chapter.
