Michael (Joe) Maher, 88, of Roeland Park, Kansas, passed away on December 9, 2013.
He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on June 10, 1925, to the late Michael and Nellie Maher. He was the second of five boys (John Pat, Francie, Tom, and Bill). He graduated from Bishop Ward High School. He served in the army in Europe during World War II. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Rockhurst College after returning. He married Laura Williams on September 4, 1948, and they spent 65 happy years together, over 50 years in Roeland Park. He was a CPA, and he spent his career in auditing and hospital administration. Later in life, he worked part time in newspaper and magazine delivery, not fully retiring until he was 82.
Joe is survived by his wife and their five children and their spouses: Cherie and Allen West, Deborah and Mark McCurnin, Bridget and Bob Carr, Michael Maher and David Sobeck, and Becky and James Summers. They also have six grandchildren and their spouses: Kelly and Travis Chapman, Brendan and Megan West, Dana and Shaylan Carr, Meghan and Zack Franke, Reuben and Summer Carr, and Winston Carr. They were also blessed with seven great grandchildren: Cale, Gage, Hayleigh, Lilyan, Liam, Carson, and Darby.
Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2013, at Amos Family Funeral Home, with a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church in Roeland Park at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013. He will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa.
The family encourages donations to Bishop Ward High School, Rockhurst University, and St. Luke's Hospice Care.
