Michaela Lee Barry, 34, passed away on December 13th, 2021. Michaela was born on April 16, 1987 to Karen and Tom Barry.
Michaela graduated from Olathe East High School in 2007. She attended various classes at JCCC and recently completed a career training program through Project Search. For several years, Michaela worked as a paraprofessional for the Olathe School District. Most recently she completed an internship at Cargill through Project Search.
Michaela enjoyed doing arts and crafts, playing cards, cooking and creating new recipes. She recently developed a love for estate sale shopping while always searching for gifts for other people. She loved to dance and listen to music, but her favorite thing was to be with family and her beloved dog, Maggie.
Michaela’s dream was to share her experiences and to educate people about heart transplantation, along with helping others going through her same experience. She and her brother were working on a project to share her story. Through all of Michaela’s challenges, she always was concerned about others first and placed their needs before her own. While dealing with terrible pain and fear, Michaela was never willing to give up. She was admired for facing her challenges with so much courage, hope and dignity. Michaela will be most remembered for her perseverance, her love of life, her love of family and friends, and the way her beautiful smile could always brighten anyone’s day. She was an amazing young woman and taught us all how to live.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Trudi and Bill Barry and maternal grandfather, Ted Halski. Michaela is survived by her parents, Tom and Karen Barry, her brother, Tom Barry (Paris), her maternal grandmother, Patricia Halski, her beloved Yorkie, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
We want to thank the Heart Institute and the Heart Transplant Team at St. Luke’s Hospital for loving Michaela and providing her with tremendous care. The family asks that memorial donations be made to the St. Luke’s Foundation in care of the Cardiac Transplant Program and to St. Paul Catholic Church, more details provided at the bottom of the page.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 19th at the Amos Family Funeral Home from 4-6 pm, with a rosary prayed at 6 pm. A funeral mass will begin at 10 am on Monday, December 20th at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, Kansas. She will be laid to rest following the mass at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
