Nancy was born August 4 th , 1934 in Westmoreland, Kansas to Arthur Amos Jackson and Kathryn Elizabeth Rumold Jackson. Growing up southwest of Westmoreland, KS, on the Jackson Farm, there were two houses remembered as the “small house” and the “big house”. Nancy and her siblings, were born in the “small house”, and enjoyed farm life. Nancy’s paternal grandparents, lived in the “big house”. One day, as her grandparents were going on vacation, unbeknownst to her grandmother, her grandfather Jackson told her father to move into the “big house” while they were gone. Of course, that didn’t sit very well with grandmother Jackson! From then on, she would sit rocking on the front porch of the “small house”, while Nancy’s grandfather, dad, and brother, worked in the fields. Nancy and her sister Virginia, were responsible for milking the cows and feeding the farm animals. They also were responsible for waxing the wood floors of the “Big House”. Nancy and Virginia, would buff the floors by using the seat of their pants!
Nancy was educated for the first 8 grades in a 1 room schoolhouse and then went on to attend Westmoreland High School, where she played the clarinet in the band and excelled at playing softball and basketball. Nancy was an excellent barrel racer, and never learned to ride a bicycle, as she was always on a horse! She loved to compete in the local Rodeos. While on a vacation trip to Florida with her parents, and as she slept in the back seat, they were involved in a tragic accident that killing both of her parents. Nancy was in a coma for quite some time, only to awake and find out later they were gone. She was only 18 years old. After recovering from her injuries, Nancy attended Secretary school and went to work at the Kansas State Capitol, in several agricultural offices.
On her “first ever” blind date, she met Robert Paris Hines, Jr. Bob was in the army, stationed at nearby Fort Riley. They dated and eventually married, October 10, 1954. For 60 years, Bob and Nancy went through life together, until his passing on July 8, 2015. Together they raised three sons and were blessed with wonderful grandchildren they loved dearly. Bob and Nancy, happily attended as many school and sports events as they could, and were so proud of each and everyone of them! As the years went by, they joyfully welcomed great-grandchildren too!
Bob and Nancy were very involved with the Masonic Shrine, Eastern Star, and Daughters of the Nile where she was elected Queen more than once. They loved traveling with the Shrine all over the country, attending many parades. Highlights included traveling to Russia as going on several cruises to the Caribbean. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Kathryn, a brother Derek, and her loving husband Bob.
