Nancy (Niederwimmer) Skahan, 56, of Shawnee, KS passed away surrounded by her loving family and dearest friends on Friday, June 9, 2023 following a valiant battle with cancer.
Nancy was born on November 28, 1966 to Carl and Lavonna (Vonnie Rindt) Niederwimmer in Kansas City, Missouri. Nancy graduated from Oak Park High School in 1985, William Jewell College 1989, M.A. Reading Education 1994 and an Educational Specialist in Reading 2003 both from University of Missouri of Kansas City. She was a teacher in Raytown C-2 Schools for 27 years before retiring, then taught for two years at Basehor-Linwood Middle School. Nancy spent most of her career as a reading specialist helping countless students and staff in that role. She was recognized as the 2003-04 Raytown Teacher of the Year.
As a child and an adult, Nancy was an avid athlete, participating in a variety of sports, including volleyball, basketball, marathons and triathlons. She also had an appreciation for traveling throughout both the United States and Europe. The only thing that surpassed her passion for teaching was her love for her husband, Scott Skahan, whom she married in 1999, and their four children. She was their biggest cheerleader in all of their curricular and extracurricular endeavors through the years, and she quietly demonstrated her strong sense of determination and faith to both her children and all those were blessed to know her.
Nancy is survived by her husband Scott; their children Rowen, Aidan, Connor, and Carys; her sister Lori Dowding (Jerry); and her mother Vonnie Niederwimmer. She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Niederwimmer.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 16th from 6-8 p.m. on and Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m., both at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5501 Monticelllo Road, Shawnee, Kansas 66226.
