Norma Jean Brock, 92, died peacefully surrounded by her family on September 21, 2019.
Norma Jean Smith was born in Paola, KS on August 24, 1927. She graduated from Central College in McPherson with a teaching certificate, and married Loren Brock on Christmas Eve in 1947. They had four children, Karen, Kathryn, Lauren and Kevin.
Norma worked in various offices before becoming the office manager for Dr. Otto Theel where she worked for 25 years. After retirement, she was able to unleash her creative side. She enjoyed working with Home Interiors and Princess House and making flower arrangements for others. She taught herself to oil paint and painted over 60 pictures-one of which won a blue ribbon at the Johnson County Fair.
She was a people person who liked to entertain friends and family with parties and holiday dinner, everyone looked forward to her meatballs at Christmas! Her hobbies included reading a good mystery and solving crossword and word search puzzles. She loved to go out to eat and frequently lunched and shopped with her granddaughter, Kris, all over the city. She liked square dance and travel and went on several cruises with family and friends. She was spunky, adventurous, and had a good sense of humor. At the age of 78 she went parasailing in spite of being afraid of water! In her Bible she had Psalm 37, v3-6 highlighted.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sadie Smith, her brother, Harold Smith, and her husband, Loren Brock. She is survived by her daughters Karen Juarez (Daniel); Kathryn Uhl (Edward); Lauren Wondersek (Richard); and son, Kevin Brock (Debbie); as well as 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6:00 - 7:00 pm Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, Shawnee, KS Funeral services will be 9 am, Wednesday at the funeral home; followed by interment at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Olathe, KS.
