Norma Jeanne Wegner, 91, of Lake Quivira, KS passed into glory on December 4, 2018. Jeanne was born in Bates Co., MO on January 15, 1927 to Alice and Orville Cox. She grew up in Hume, MO. She attended KU where she met her husband Richard (Rocket). She received a bachelor's degree in early childhood development. They were married September 19, 1948. She started preschools at Trinity and Hope Lutheran Church and at Lake Quivira. With that experience she could care for 13 grandchildren by herself. Her favorite joys of life were children and music. She spent her days singing to her children and grandchildren.
Richard A. Wegner (Rocket), 92, of Lake Quivira, KS, joined her in glory on December 7, 2018. Richard was born in Cogar, OK on January 22, 1926 to Erna and Adolph Wegner. He grew up in Newton and Great Bend where in high school his basketball teammates nicknamed him "The Rocket" for his speed up and down the court. He worked in western Kansas doing oil pipeline work with his Dad. At 17 he enlisted in the Army with a note from his Mother. He had his 19th birthday in the trenches at the Battle of the Bulge where he froze his feet. He was in intelligence and was a scout to locate Germans. He came home and attended KU and was in ROTC. He joined the Air Force as a pilot and flew in Korea. He and Jeanne were stationed in Japan and the Philippines.
They returned to Kansas and he signed on with TWA in 1952. He was a TWA Captain until mandatory retirement at the age of 60. He stayed in the Air Force reserves obtaining the rank of Brigadier General and then Major General (Two Stars).
Jeanne and Rocket were married 70 years. They were Charter members of Hope Lutheran Church, Shawnee. They enjoyed a house in Chapala, Mexico. They spent 2 years in Jeddah, Saudi-Arabia where Rocket trained Saudi pilots.
They have four children; Becky (Randy) Overton, Rocky Wegner, Beth (Larry) Baldridge, and Dick (Kathy) Wegner. They have 13 grandchildren; Bethany (Joel) Schroeder, Christian, Nathan (Lauren), Aaron (Nancy), Briell, Abrah Overton, Adam, Joshua (Kendra) Baldridge, Brynee (Kendrick) Shorter, Leah (Nate) Theiss, Matthew (Anais), Jared and Luke Wegner.
A visitation will be 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. Memorial Service on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Hope Lutheran Church in Shawnee, Kansas. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers the family would like memorial contributions to be send to Hope Lutheran Church School, 6308 Quivira Rd., Shawnee, KS 66216
