Peter H. Herren (born Hans-Peter Herrenknecht) was born on October 8, 1927, in Berlin, Germany, to Hertha and Hans-Walter Herrenknecht. Peter passed away at home after a lengthy illness on February 20, 2012.
An hotelier, he graduated from The Hotel School in Bad Wiessee, Germany, where he was educated and trained. Peter held positions at The Regency, The Americana, The Waldorf Astoria, The Helmsley Hotel and the JFK Hilton in New York City. He retired in 1991 from The Helmsley Hotel, where he held the position as Vice President/General Manager. During his professional career of over 50 years, he managed properties in Germany, England, Monte Carlo and Sydney, Australia. Peter was a member of The Waldorf Astoria Alumni Association, Hotel Executives Association and was a Certified Hotel Administrator, President of Rotary and President JFK Chamber of Commerce are among some of his accomplishments. Peter was a 32nd degree Mason and completed the York Rite and the Scottish Rite
After living in New York City for 45 years, he and his wife Janet returned to Kansas City where he spent his last years loved and cared for by his Kansas City family, Audrey and Richard Samuels, Sr., Mary and Barry Blank, R.J. and Elisa Samuels jr, Judy and Alan Wessel, Joan and Jim Cattey, all the nephews and nieces. His faithful Smithville friends Manfred & Susie Hetzel, Horst Schwab & Brenda Bell, Franz & Annelies Leuthardt, Dieter & Irna Schmitz are among his special friends. Thank you to family and friends who supported us through these difficult times.
Peter is survived by his wife of 29 years, Janet Samuels-Herren; two children from a previous marriage; a son, David of Circle, Alaska; a daughter, Rebecca Herren-Blatt (Michael); and two grandchildren Emma and Jared of Rhode Island.
