Phillip Clyde Shriner

Phillip Clyde Shriner was born February 18th, 1943, the second child of John and Margaret (Martin) Shriner. Phil grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and later in Merriam, Kansas and was baptized at the Methodist Church in Independence, Missouri. During high school Phil worked part-time for the Johnson County Library as a page and processing books. Phil graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1961. After graduation, Phil held a number of jobs, including bank teller, briefly as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, and later as a Cost Accountant for the Tension Envelope Company. In 1964, he toured Europe on a motorcycle and made new friends with the Barker family from England.

In 1966, Phil joined the Army National Guard, serving as a Medical Corpsman and Medical Assistant for 5 and half years and was called up to active duty for 21 months during the Vietnam War. During active duty, he was stationed at Fort Carson and later Manitou Springs, Colorado. In 1970, Phil began his career working for the railroad. He began as a locomotive fireman and soon after as a locomotive engineer with the Frisco Railway, which was later purchased to become part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. His career in railroad lasted 38 years. In 1978, Phil once again chose to serve his country, joining the Air Force as an Air Medic. In 1991, Phil briefly served in active duty at a military hospital as part of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

Phil had a lifelong love of learning. The many books he collected over the years were on a myriad of topics including history, art, religion, science, humanities, and medicine. Phil studied at Johnson County Community College, receiving an Associates Degree in Humanities. He also studied Nursing for two years at Mid-America Nazarene College.

Phil married Sharon Lynn Armstrong in May 26th, 1984 in Pineville, Missouri and adopted her two sons, Rex and Brian on July 13th, 1987. Sharon passed away October 31st, 1996. Rex and his wife Tai have two children, Hayden and Sloane. Brian and his wife Holly also have two children, Leah and Hope. Since 1998, Phil has been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Through the Church, Phil met Jacqueline Hoelscher and the two were married in Des Moines, Iowa on April 28th, 2012, being together over 8 years until his passing this year on June 12th.

Phil's passing will be mourned by his entire family, his many friends, and members of his church. He will always be remembered for his generosity and gentleness of spirit. Phil had a love of the outdoors and for the simple comforts of life, family, good food, peace, and harmony. He was defined by a desire to help and heal others, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Phillip Shriner lived a lifetime of devoted service to family, friends, community, and to country. That service and charity toward all mankind will be his enduring legacy in the hearts of every soul he ever touched.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret and his wife Sharon. He is survived by his wife Jackie; his sons and daughters-in-law; his four grandchildren; his brother John Shriner and John's wife Mary; his sisters Margaret Rose House, Beverly McDonald, Elaine Shriner, Kathleen Angelastro and her husband Carmine; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be 11:00 am, Monday, June 22, 2020 at Amos Family Funeral Home; burial in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. A visitation will be from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Sunday, June 21, 2020 at Amos Family Funeral Home.

Please be aware that we are limiting the number of people in the chapel to 45. We will be rotating people through the chapel during the visitation as best as we can. We ask that people respect and comply with social distancing and also recommend wearing masks.
