Prudence J. Basel, 96, passed away February 26, 2015 at Lakeview Village in Lenexa Kansas. She was born on February 24, 1919 in Richland, Missouri to Edmund and Minnie Steckel and spent her early years at their resort near Richland. She was the valedictorian of her high school senior class. She married Dana L. Basel on August 17, 1947 in Ferguson, Missouri. In 1951 they moved to Shawnee, Kansas where they lived for more than 40 years and raised their family. Prudence and Dana retired to Lakeview Village in 1992 where they spent many happy years together. She received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri Kansas City. She had a long teaching career starting in Richland and then for many years at the Crestview School in the Shawnee Mission School District. Prudence was active in her children's activities. She served as den mother, taught Sunday school, enjoyed attending sports games and was a supportive Boy Scout mother for many years. She was well known for her baking skills, especially her delicious homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. In their retirement years, Prudence and Dana enjoyed traveling to many interesting places around the globe. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her sons; Dana Basel Jr. and wife Karen of Jefferson City, Missouri, Brian Basel and wife Connie of Overland Park, Kansas, Chris Basel and wife Grace of Overland Park, Kansas, six grandchildren, Laura, Ron, Emily, Matthew, Paul, and Timothy, and eight great-grandchildren, Thomas, Juliana, Jonathan, Jedidiah, Olivia, Edmund, Abbey and Graham. Prudence was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dana Lell Basel in 2010, two sisters, one brother, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Basel, first wife of Chris.
A Visitation is set for 1:00 - 2:00 PM, Saturday March 7, 2015 at Shawnee United Methodist Church 10700 Johnson Drive Shawnee, Kansas 66203 with a Funeral Service immediately following at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions in Prudence's name may be made to The Shawnee United Methodist Church Women's Mission.
