After a very short illness, R. Elvin Miller, 93, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
Elvin, son of Rolla and Beulah Miller, was born June 25, 1922 on a farm located near Erie, Kansas. Elvin's early education was in rural Neosho County Kansas. He graduated from Grant Township High School in Stark, Kansas. Elvin attended Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas until his education was interrupted by military service in World War II. He served as a Navy, Merchant Marine radio operator in the Pacific. Elvin married Gladys Marrs, June 24, 1945 and returned to Baker University graduating in 1947.
After graduation from Baker, Elvin and Gladys moved to Paola, Kansas where Elvin taught US history, government and coached boys' basketball. He began his career with Shawnee Mission Public Schools in 1955; as a government and history teacher at Old Mission Junior High; counselor at Shawnee Mission North and Northwest; and Director of Vocational Education , Guidance and Testing. Upon his retirement, he became an active member of the Johnson County Retired Teachers.
Elvin married Margaret Farris March 17, 1984. They resided in Prairie Village until moving to Lakeview Village in 1994. Elvin and Margaret worked as a team volunteering in many capacities at: Lakeview Village; Southminister Presbyterian Church; Crosslines Food Kitchen; Union Station Science Center; and Trinity Lutheran Hospital.
Elvin is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Martha Raybourn of Leawood; son, Paul Miller (Peggie) of Olathe; sister, Lela Beach of Colorado Springs; brother, Cecil (Carol Lee) of Lenexa; and brother, Jim of Hilton Head, South Carolina along with nine nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys of 37 years; sister Berva Phillips; brothers-in law, Kenneth Phillips and Robert Beach; and sister in-law, Jane Miller.
A memorial service will be held November 19, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Southminister Presbyterian Church, 6306 Roe Avenue, Prairie Village, KS 66202.
