Richard D. Fishback

October 9, 1952 — July 27, 2023

Lake Quivira, KS

Richard Douglas Fishback, 70, of Lake Quivira, KS, passed away on July 27, 2023.  He was born on October 9, 1952 in Renton, Washington to Malcolm and Henrietta Fishback.

Rich is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Fishback; father, Malcolm Fishback; mother, Hankie Fishback.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Fishback; sons Bo (Shelby) Fishback, Luke (Sarah Kate) Fishback; grandchildren, Pierce, Asa, Merritt; sister, Nancy Jo Weber.

Rich was generous to a fault.

While living in El Paso, Texas in elementary school he was involved in an explosion that resulted in the loss of his right hand. This never slowed him down.

His family was transferred to Hawaii and Rich became the bat boy for the Army baseball team. Music was in his blood - his Radford Rams high school football team serenaded the fans before and after every game.

He was an offensive lineman, played first base, and even hit a hole-in-one at his son’s bachelor party. He loved the water. Neptune, as many friends called him, may still hold the record for most days of school skipped to go scuba diving.

He was one of eight students in the very first respiratory therapy program at the Medical College of Georgia. After several years at a large university hospital he started Augusta Health Alliance, a home oxygen company. After selling the business he and Nancy moved to Edisto, SC. He developed back problems and became obsessed with bicycling around the island. His favorite people were given nicknames. He called his wife “Freck”.

As a dear friend said, late in his life his pain was a like an unstoppable hurricane. Moving his life to Lake Quivira, close to his grandchildren was his hardest move but his most generous as he knows Freck will be in good hands.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Amos Family Funeral Home.

Donations in his name can be made to the Medical College of Georgia at MCGfoundation.org
