Richard Lee Tevis, 88, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021 at The Healthcare Resort of Leawood.
Richard was the youngest child of 5 and was born on June 9, 1932 in Kansas City, KS. to Ralph Sr. and Alice Tevis. He grew up in Kansas City, KS. and attended Wyandotte High School. Richard participated in basketball, football, and track while in high school, graduating in 1951. He then enrolled in Kansas City Kansas Community College where he earned a letter playing basketball.
On December 7th, 1953 Richard enlisted in the Army, assigned to the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. At the time, the 4th Infantry division was deployed to Germany in support of NATO. During his two years of service in the Army, Richard received both the National Defense Service Medal for being active duty during the Korean War and the Army of Occupation Medal for service in Germany.
Soon after, Richard realized he had an aptitude for mechanics and electronics which lead into his career and later helped him develop a lifelong hobby. Richard joined the Pipefitters Local Union 533 in 1966 and has been a lifelong member. Prior to retirement, Richard combined his aptitude for mechanics and electronics with his love for antiques and began collecting and repairing antique phonographs.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lillian Kennedy, brothers, Ralph Tevis Jr., Harold Tevis, and Robert Tevis. Survivors include his four children; Trent Tevis (Alissa), Renee Smith (Wayne), Kip Tevis (Kerri), and Roxane Tevis as well as seven grandchildren; Tarent (Morgan) Tevis, Grant (Heidi) Tevis, Nicholas Vinyard, Hannah, Nathan, Nolan, and Leah Smith and one great-grandchild; Lorelei Tevis.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2021. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. immediately following the visitation. Richard will be laid to rest at Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee. His service in the military will be honored by the Army and the American Legion Post #327.
