October 20, 1930 — May 20, 2020

Robert "Bob" Atteberry, 89, passed away on May 20, 2020 at his home.

Bob was born on October 20, 1930 to Dee and Foi Vaile (Lichtenberger)  Atteberry in Salina, Kansas.

Bob attended the University of Kansas, graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1953, and his Juris Doctor degree in 1960. He furthered his education at Northwestern University and graduated from The National Trust School in 1965.

From July, 1953 through June, 1955 Bob served in the United States Army and was stationed at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserves in July, 1961.

On August 18, 1956 Bob married Catherine "Kay"  Kerr and started a family while continuing his education to obtain his law degree at The University of Kansas.

In 1962, Bob left private law practice to pursue a career as an Assitant Trust Officer at the Columbia National Bank. He was eventually promoted to Trust Officer and then  Vice President in 1967.

Bob joined The Southgate Bank in 1971 as Vice President and Trust Officer in charge of the Trust Division.  While at Southgate Bank he filled many leadership roles including Director and Secretary of The Southgate Banking Corporation, Advisory Director and Secretary of the Southgate Bank, President of the Trust Division of the Kansas Bankers Association, Director of the Estate Planning Association of Kansas City, and Director of the Eastern Kansas Estate Planning Council.  He was also a member of The Kansas City Bar Association,  The Rotary Club International, and The Carriage Club of Kansas City.  He was  a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity, and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.

After 19 years at the Southgate Bank and Trust Company in Prairie Village, Kansas, he retired in May of 1990 as president of the trust company.  Before he could even enjoy his retirement, The First National Bank of Olathe offered him another career as Senior Vice President and Trust Officer after the Kansas Bank Commissioners Office highly recommended him.  He finally officially retired from banking in 1993.

Although he had a very strong work ethic, Bob also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He especially enjoyed camping, tennis, hunting, fly fishing, traveling, photography,  technology, and spending time appreciating nature. He was also a car enthusiast.  During the last five years of his life he doubled his goal of reading one thousand books. As a result of his well rounded interests, he was a very knowledgeable man.

Left to cherish Bob's memory are his two children,  son Christopher (Diana), and daughter Karen Eugster (Steve), four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Catherine Kerr Atteberry.

Private family services will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64105.
