Robert L. Baker

Robert (Bob) L. Baker, 88, of Kansas City, KS (formerly of Garden City, KS) died March 31, 2020 at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS following a short illness.

Bob was born July 6, 1931 in Sublette, KS to Cecil C. and Mamie E. (Miller) Baker.  A 1949 graduate of Sublette High School, he later attended Garden City Community College.  On August 26, 1951, he married Dixie L. (Burton) Baker in Denver, CO.  She preceded him in death on January 25, 2009.

Bob served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954, training in photography armament at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO.  He later served with a video production squadron at the US Air Force facility at Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, CA, and later at Orlando Air Force Base in Orlando, FL for the APCS (Air Photographic and Charting Service).  From 1954 until 1961, he and his wife owned and operated Baker's (Photography) Studio in Hugoton, KS.  He continued to do freelance photography for newspapers and television stations throughout Southwest Kansas in the 1960s and 1970s.  In August, 1987, Bob retired after working 26 years as a department manager for Sears & Roebuck in Garden City.

He was a member of The First United Methodist Church, Garden City, and a long-time member of the Builder's Sunday School Class.

Bob enjoyed football, basketball (especially watching KU), baseball, hunting, fishing, boating, playing pool and dominos.  He served as player, coach, referee and spectator for numerous sports throughout the years.  He was a one-man championship force when it came to playing Trivia.  Everyone always wanted to be on Bob's team!  He especially loved going camping at Milford Lake twice each summer with his family, and in later years, spending time with family at his daughters (Becky) house at Lake of the Ozarks.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years; a sister, Marjorie E. (Baker) Barton; a brother, Bryce E. Baker; two brothers-in-law, Donald Barton and John C. Burnside; and two nephews.

Survivor's include: a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby (Jolene) Baker; three daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy (Mark) Green of Garden City, Becky (Mark) Nicholson of Shawnee, KS and Mariann (Kenn) Florell of Holiday, FL; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles C. Baker of Clarkston, WA; a sister, Barbara (Baker) Burnside of Katy, TX; a sister-in-law, Diane Baker of  Oklahoma City, OK; eight grandchildren; eight great-grand children and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Amos Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Shawnee, KS are making the arrangements, however, because of the COVID-19 outbreak, funeral and graveside services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Mamie E. Baker/ Bob and Dixie Memorial Scholarship Fund at Garden City Community College.
