Bob’s story

Bob George, a Shawnee resident for forty years, finished his earthly journey at the age of 75 on June 6, 2019 after battling bladder cancer.  Every day of this battle he did his utmost to be among the living.

His life was marked by many passions - his wife and home, hot rod cars, motorcycles, ham radio, and a successful career in law enforcement.

Earning the rank of sergeant in both the Shawnee County Sheriff Department and the Johnson County Sheriff Department, Bob served as a dispatcher, patrol officer, and shift supervisor.  He concluded his career by supervising the Johnson County Sheriff presence at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center in Olathe, KS.  He also was a shift sergeant for campus security at Emporia State University and a patrol officer for the Olathe Police Department.

Bob earned a BSE in Industrial Education at Emporia State University where he graduated cum laude.  He was intuitive about and especially fascinated by automotive technology and electronics.

Bob began his presence on the air as K0ZDQ when he earned his novice class ham radio license in his early teens.  Eventually he earned the highest level of licensing, his Extra Class, and built  many ham radio stations.  His success, measured by the strength of his signal, was due to his in depth study and construction of an impressive antenna system.  He was very generous in mentoring new hams by sharing his extensive knowledge and helping them set up quality stations.

Bob married Clara Ann Schneider May 15, 1971.  They shared 48 years of being loving partners.  Clara was Bob's primary care giver during his final months.  As they promised each other at the beginning of this unexpected and unwanted journey, they cherished every good moment together.

In addition to Clara, Bob is survived by his sister Patricia Miller, Phoenix AZ, seven beloved nieces and nephews and sixteen greats.  A wide circle of friends and extended family supported Bob during his last months.  Preceding him in death were his parents Wilma and Robert George.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 13, 2019 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. followed by a service starting at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Old Monticello Cemetery, 21400 W. 73rd Terrance, Shawnee, KS 66218 after the service.

One of Bob's strong convictions was that no one should ever go hungry and we should be able to feed every person in this country.  To support him in this focus and as a fitting memorial, in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to any of these Kansas City organizations whose mission is to feed the hungry: Harvesters, 3801 Topping Ave. Kansas City, MO 64129; St. Marys Food Kitchen, 645 Nebraska Ave. Knasas City, KS 66101 or Catholic Charities Food Pantry 9720 W. 87th St. Overland Park, KS 66212. Gifts can be made online or given to Amos Family who will direct them.
