Robert G. Walmer

Robert G. (Bob) Walmer, age 88, of Leawood, Kansas, died Monday, March 9, 2015. Bob was the last of five children born to Ruth (Cortner) and Fred Walmer on April 3, 1926, in Luray Kansas. After his mother's death, Bob lived with his sister, Thelma, and her husband, Harold Ward, in Herington Kansas. Right after graduation from high school, which was during World War II, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Naval Air Force, where he received training as an aviation mechanic in preparation for the expected invasion of Japan. After Japan's surrender his group was diverted to a Naval Air Transport base on Oahu, Hawaii.

Bob earned a B.A and a law degree from Kansas University. While attending KU he worked part time at Evans Auto Supply, where he met his wife Virginia. They married in 1949. After briefly practicing law in Herington, Bob became a claims adjuster for Employers Insurance of Wausau, where he worked for 36 years, first in Wichita, Kansas, then in Des Moines, Iowa as Claims Manager, and as Regional Claims Manager based in the Kansas City area. After retirement Bob and Virginia did extensive genealogy research and travel, and for many years both volunteered in the genealogy department of the Johnson County Central Library.

Bob is preceded in death by all of his siblings: Loren Walmer, Thelma Ward, Elden Walmer, and Paul Walmer. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Nichols) Walmer; his children Daphne Walmer and husband David Herreid, Colette and husband Jim Majerle, and David Walmer; his grandchildren Matt Majerle and wife Allie, Michelle Majerle and fiancé Andrew Hill, Alyssa Herreid Bowman and husband Jared, Elena Herreid; and his great grandchildren Sage and Margo.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Indian Heights United Methodist Church, 10211 Nall Avenue, Overland Park.
