Roger Dean Holmes

Roger Dean Holmes, 80, Shawnee, Kansas passed away Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Roger was born Jan. 28, 1929 in Shawnee, Kansas to Albert Richard and Elizabeth Edith (Wendt) Holmes and was a lifelong Shawnee resident. He was an aviation electrician in the US Navy for eight years during the Korean War. Roger was an electrician for Montgomery Ward, Gulf Oil Research and Development and Belger Cartage Co. On September 19, 1953, Roger married Phyllis Smith Wilson in Shawnee, Kansas. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Shawnee since 1956. He attended the Calvary Bible College from 1949-1953. He served on the Deacon Board, Property Management, Staff Relations Committee, Finance Committee, Discipleship Committee and also in the capacity of Sunday school teacher, usher, choir member and Scoutmaster. He was also a member of the OGC's and volunteered electrical work at the church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Frances Holmes and Dorothy Larson. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis S. Holmes of the home; three children, Beth (Brad) Kitselman, LaCenter, Washington, Roger (Kathy) Holmes, Overland Park, Kansas and Phil (Melinda) Holmes, Olathe, Kansas; sister, Mitzi Edwards, Dewey, Arizona; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the First Baptist Church of Shawnee, 11400 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203, Hospice Care of Kansas, 15329 W. 95th, Lenexa, Kansas or the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64145.

Visitation and Funeral Service

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 23 at the First Baptist Church of Shawnee; burial in the Johnson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 7:30-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 at the church.
