Roger Leroy Johnson

April 21, 1944 — March 12, 2016

Roger L. Johnson, 71, of Olathe, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Roger was born April 21, 1944 to the late Ted and Lucille Johnson, in Axtell, Kansas. Roger served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Savage during the Vietnam war. After his naval career, Roger worked for TWA and Airbus as an Avionics Instructor. His career took him to over 20 countries. Roger helped develop the course work for the A380 Airbus. He enjoyed racing a Volkswagon Bug and won over 15 races while living in Kansas City. Roger also enjoyed racing sailboats out of the Miami Yacht Club, placing in the top three in most regattas.

Roger is preceded in death by his sister, Betty McAtee. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Eleanor J.T. Johnson; a daughter, Sheila McCumber and husband Thomas; two sons, Sidney Matthews-Johnson and wife Jennifer; Ryan Johnson; four grandsons, Christopher Matthews, Jacob Matthews, Justin McCumber, Rusty Wayne McCumber; a brother, Gary Johnson and wife Eileen; a sister, Joyce Dorner and husband Don; and brother in law, Buck McAtee.

Roger was an amazing man and will never be forgotten. He has wheeled and soared and now has touched the face of God.
