Roland R “Skip” Phelps, 87, of Shawnee, KS passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 25th, 2021.
Skip was born in Kansas City, KS. In 1952, he graduated from Argentine High School and went on to serve as an apprentice in the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No 2. He was very proud of this accomplishment and his association with Local No 2. After working under the tutelage of the finest in the industry, he later bought the company and became President of Barnes & Dodge, Inc. Throughout his career he also served SMACNA on many committees and as their local President. He also belonged to Ben Hur Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Abdallah Shrine. He enjoyed many years coaching various youth sports through the YMCA. Skip used his background in construction to serve his local church on their building projects. He would tell you he was greatly blessed and believed in giving back. As a hard working, honest man, he touched many lives during his career in the construction industry. He was a true example of integrity and thankfulness, so it was appropriate that he went home to be with Jesus on Thanksgiving day.
Skip was a devoted husband to his wife, and a cherished father and grandfather to the family he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Zella (Barron) Phelps, and his children Roger (Gail) Phelps, Russ (Jeanette) Phelps, Jan (Jeremy) Kornis; his 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Lenexa Baptist Church. Reception starting at 10:00am, with the service at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, Skip asked that any donations be made in his honor to the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital.
