Ruth Marie Higgins

November 15, 1929 — May 20, 2021

1929 was the year that the Chicago Cubs won the pennant. It was also the year that Ruth Marie Higgins was born. There must have been some magic in the air that fall in Chicago, Illinois, because this duo was a force to be reckoned with.

Ruth was a lifelong Cubs fan, devoting endless hours to Wrigley Field, especially on Ladies Day. She even got a Cubs tattoo on her 80th birthday, which she planned all on her own. Ruth had the same devotion to the love of her life George, her four children, eight grandchildren and countless friends. Although she was 91, she was young at heart, continually making new friends of all ages. She worked hard at staying fit by walking in the pool each day for two hours with a lively group of companions who shared secrets and solved world problems. Ruth was the definition of tenacious, and she lived each day to the absolute fullest, inspiring those around her to do the same.

Ruth was also a dedicated caregiver. As a teenager she cared for her mother, who was wheelchair bound due to Parkinson’s disease. She continued to care for her mother as a newlywed, and even when she became a young mother herself. She often took in other family members, including brothers, brothers-in-law and nephews. Ruth and George opened their home so often that they never had a chance to live alone until their youngest child went to college. When Ruth wasn’t helping out her family, she volunteered in the ICU at Research Medical Center and then in the ER at Palos Hospital in Chicago, where she was famous for her Chocolate chip cookies. Her final caregiver role was to her husband George, whom she gave such loving attention to.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband George Higgins and her son George Higgins Jr. She leaves behind her children Timothy Higgins, Kathleen Richardson and Maureen (Jerry) Gaughan, and eight grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church located at 11311 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, KS 66203.
