Sandra L. Gunkel (Bonewits), known affectionately as Sandy, passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones, after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Born in Kansas City, MO on December 4, 1961, Sandy lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments.
Throughout her 62 years of life, Sandy touched the lives of many through her work and her passions. She dedicated years of service to companies such as Padgett Thompson, Hammer Brothers, Kustom Signals, and Clore Automotive before retiring. A true sports enthusiast, Sandy found joy in playing volleyball in high school and swimming at Emporia State University. She continued her love for the game by coaching and attending the girls' volleyball matches. Sandy also enjoyed spending peaceful days at the lake and passionately supported her favorite teams, the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.
Sandy's faith was an integral part of her life, and she was an active member of Lenexa United Methodist Church. She also played a key role in starting the Empire Volleyball Club, further showcasing her dedication to her community and love for volleyball.
Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, William (Bill) and Joanne (Jo Mama) Bonewits. She is survived by her devoted husband, Rodney Gunkel, her loving daughters Katie and Bonny Gunkel, as well as her siblings Ron, Curt, David Bonewits, and Karen Lathrop.
A visitation to honor Sandy's memory will be held on Sunday, June 30th from 2-4PM, with a funeral service following on July 1st at 2:00PM at Amos Family Funeral Home on Johnson Dr in Shawnee, KS. Following the service, a gathering for sharing stories and memories will be held at Tanner's on 87th St in Lenexa from 3:00 - 6:00PM. The family suggests memorials to the Lenexa United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Fund.
Sandy's kind spirit, unwavering faith, and love for life will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in peace.
