SCPO ret. Douglas Reid Vance, 72, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away February 15, 2012, after a long battle with diabetes.
Doug was born February 26, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Reid Hudson and Vera Odell (Reid) Vance. He was united in marriage to Gloria Wilder on December 18, 1964, and they were sealed for time and eternity in theL os Angeles Temple on February 23, 1973. Douglas graduated from Central High School in Nashville, Tansas. He received his Bachelor of Business from the University of the City of New York in 1983 and his MBA from Webster University in 1994. Doug served his country in the US Navy, retiring after 22 years of service. He received many awards including, the Fifth Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, and a Navy Achievement Medal.
He worked for Allied Signal and American Electronics for many years before being a very proud door greeter at Walmart. Doug loved football and enjoyed his time coaching at the Navy Air Station in Millington, Tennessee. He was a devoted member of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints and served as President of the Rola Spain Branch as well as a temple worker in the St. Louis and Frankfurt Germany Temples.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Gloria Wilder Vance; their children, Debrah Lynn Suttner of Tonawanda, New York, David Suttner and wife Mindy of St. George, Utah, and Dana Lisa Vance-Sear of Kansas City, Kansas; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at the LDS Olathe Stake Center, 15915 W. 143rd Street, Olathe, Kansas. There will be a family viewing beginning at 2:30 pm. Burial will be in Payne Town Cemetery, Quinlan, Texas.
