Sedrick C. Apple

July 6, 1921 — October 31, 2013

Sedrick C. Apple (Sed), 92, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2013, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Sed was born July 6, 1921, in Bonham, Texas, and followed a new job opportunity that led him to Kansas City, where he and his beloved wife Cecilia raised their five children. Sed served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he met Cecilia. They were married in 1945 in Paris, France (how romantic is that!). Sed had a long career in the bread industry working for Holsum Bakery as a jobber, retiring in 1998. But, he never quit working, doing odd jobs to keep him busy until Alzheimer's took his mind (but not his heart and soul).

Growing up poor, Sed made it his life's mission to provide for his family and making sure they never wanted for anything. He succeeded. On a workman's salary, he put five kids through Catholic schools and college. On the surface, Sed could have been viewed as gruff, but anyone who knew him saw the big teddy bear inside. A hard-working man with a heart of gold, Sed would engage anyone in conversation and was a friend to everyone he met. Sed enjoyed outdoor activities including fishing and hunting (along with raking leaves - he was obsessed with keeping an immaculate lawn). Early in his life, bowling was his passion.

Sedrick loved his children and would make any personal sacrifice to see them happy. He was so proud of his four grandkids and he played a huge role in raising them all. And they loved him dearly. His wife of 56 years, Cecilia, and son-in-law Steve Seiersen preceded Sed in death. Sed is survived by his five children, Kathryn Stoneman (Kevin), Mike Apple (Molly) of Overland Park, Kansas, Mary Seierson, (Steve), of Cassville, Missouri, Tom Apple (Debi), of Olathe, Kansas, and Bob Apple of Phoenix, Arizona; and four grandchildren, Kristen Apple, Spencer Stoneman, Max Apple and Sam Apple. We all will miss him.
