Selma I. Beaty, 89, of Shawnee, KS passed away on August 6, 2015. She was born in Garden City, Ind., in August 1925, into a family of two brothers and three sisters. Selma grew up on a 56-acre farm in rural Evansville, Ind. After graduation from Reitz High School, she was employed with Republic Aviation, soldering harnesses on the Thunderbolt P-47 fighter aircraft.
She married a naval air cadet, Chuck Beaty, in 1947. In 1956 they moved to Massachusetts, where her husband was employed with TWA. The family came to Kansas in 1963 and made their home on the gravel road of 67th Street west of Pflumm Road.
Selma was active in variety of activities throughout her life. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Baptist church offices, Ladies Missionary groups, and volunteer work at the library and Overland Park Regional Hospital occupied her life as a mother raising a family. She and her late husband saw their four children graduate from three different Shawnee Mission high schools.
Two daughters, Selma Steinhilber and April Beaty, continue to reside in Kansas, while a third, Kathleen (Mark) Jones, lives in Las Vegas, NV. A son, Chuck, died in 1980. Her husband, Chuck, died in 1996. She was survived by five grandchildren: Richard Arnold, Corey Arnold, Vanessa Jones, Amanda Steinhilber Ryan and Samantha Steinhilber Lopez; great grandchildren,
Ava Jones-DeLeon and Rayne Lopez.
Visitation will be held at Amos Family Funeral Home on Monday, August 10 from 10-11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with burial at Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee, KS.
