SHARON STEWART – A LIFE OF CARING
Sharon Carlene Stewart was born in Chetopa, KS on November 12, 1938 to her parents Carl and Pauline Willis. Although, her family moved more than once while she was growing up, she was still able to graduate high school and received her diploma at the age of eighteen. Sharon was preceded in death by her husband William Stewart and is survived by her son, Lane Cravatt and her daughter Gena Stewart, along with two grandchildren, Brianna Cummins and Alex Cummins. Sharon passed from this world on the morning of December 21, 2021.
Life was not especially kind to her when it came to her own family, especially with the death of her husband and her daughter being unable to care for her own children. Sharon, however, had the courage to take on the task of raising her grandchildren as if they were her own and provided them with the love only a grandmother can give. Even when it came to a point where she could no longer provide monetarily for them, we were blessed as Brianna and Alex’s new family to always have her support in finishing the job of raising them. Sharon had many hobbies and activities that kept her busy. Being an avid reader was certainly one of them, with John Grisham being her favorite author. Nothing like a good crime mystery to peak her interest. She truly loved flowers and always looked forward to getting new ones. Unfortunately, as she confessed, she did not have a green thumb and therefore they had to be replaced on a regular basis. Lucky for her that Brianna worked for a nursery!
Thursdays were a busy day for Sharon as she would have to get up super early to catch a ride with one of her friends to the food pantry in Spring Hill. There she enjoyed the prayers and devotions that were offered and she always made sure to pick up extra bacon for Alex. Thursday evenings were spent playing Bingo with Betty and some of Sharon’s other friends at the American Legion in Olathe.
Sharon’s other love of her life, besides her kids and grandkids, was her cat Logan. He pretty much ruled the house and was always her companion. He is being well taken care of in his new home with Alex. Sharon loved animals in general and was always sneaking treats to her canine friends whether it be at Betty’s house or in Wellsville.
One of the other things that made Sharon special was her devotion to her grandkids. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she would be sure to drive Brianna and Alex around town to see all the lights. She would attend all the band concerts, parades, and other school functions that kids were involved in. Later in life, she was able to share her love of music with the kids by attending concerts with them, such as Rod Stewart, Cindy Lauper, and Grandma’s favorite, Bob Seger.
Many people’s thoughts on Grandma, beside how caring she was, will be how she loved her sweets. While she always had candy around, when she was at the Retirement Center she stock piled suckers and those nurses knew they better have a Dum Dum sucker ready if they were giving her any medicine. Alex kept her well stocked and I’m pretty sure all the kids in his neighborhood will be getting red suckers for Halloween next year courtesy of Grandma.
I think, without exception, that everyone that knew Sharon always begins speaking about her by saying she was “Such a sweet lady.” She touched many people with her ability to spread love and hope to all, which led many of the nurses to comment that she was their favorite patient. She never wanted anything for herself, but instead always tried to give others what she could, even if it was just a kind word.
Goodbye for now Grandma, we were blessed to know you and thank you for being part of our lives, now and forever.
