Shirley E. Hintz

May 12, 1943 — October 23, 2018

Shirley Edith Janet Hintz, 75, passed away Oct. 23, 2018. A longtime resident of Prairie Village, Kan., Shirley most recently lived at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park.

Born May 12, 1943, Shirley lived in Eureka Springs, Ark., and Neosho, Mo., during her childhood. She was the daughter of Reinhold and Ella (Beutler) Hintz, who immigrated to the U.S. from Germany, and the younger sister of Alice H. Hall.

A graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., Shirley received a master's degree in Library Science from Denver University. She spent most of her career sharing her love of books with students in the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) School District. She served as a librarian at Milburn Junior High School and Shawnee Mission West High School. Prior to that, she was a Young Adult specialist in the Kansas City, Mo., Public Library.

She loved going to antique stores and carefully choosing beautiful pieces for her home. She was fond of pottery and early American furniture. A big fan of movies, Shirley had an extensive DVD collection, and her favorites included "Pride and Prejudice" and "Bridget Jones's Diary." Of course she also loved to read, particularly thrillers. Daniel Silva and David Baldacci were two of her favorite authors.

Early in her career, Shirley lived on the Country Club Plaza, where she would invite her nieces for sleepovers. Shirley was always the one at family gatherings who had her camera handy, taking pictures to record the celebrations. She always made sure everyone had copies of their favorite images. She faithfully remembered family and friends on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays.

Many will miss her, including sister Alice Hall of Lenexa, Kan., nieces Kathleen Lipari of Prairie Village, Kan., Laura Adams of Overland Park, Kan., and Christine (and John) Rodgers of Shawnee, Kan.; great-nieces and nephews Jennifer (and Chris) Smith of Walsall Wood, England, Kristin Lipari of Prairie Village, T.J. (and April) Lipari of Overland Park, Sarah Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y., and David and Jared Rodgers of Shawnee; great-great-niece and nephews Rena, Christian and Brayden Lipari; and wonderful friends Marnie and Layton Conley of Overland Park, and Betty and Rick Elofson of Newport News, Va., and their children Amanda and Matthew.
