SMaj. Cecil E. Woods, 93, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Sunday May 16, 2010, at the Sweet Life at Rosehill.
Cecil was born January 11, 1917, to James and Ethel Woods in Kansas City, Missouri. Cecil graduated from Northeast High School in 1935. He joined the United States Army in July of 1943 and served in World War II. Cecil participated in the Normandy Invasion and served in Northern France and Central Europe including the Battle of the Bulge where he received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster. For his actions during the war he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal and Legion of Merit. He also was twice awarded the Army Commendation Medal for exemplary service during peacetime. Cecil served until he retired from active duty in 1962 with the rank of Sergeant Major.
He is survived by his three sons, Craig E. Woods, Baldwin, Missouri, Curtis E. Woods, Kansas City, Missouri, Clark E. Woods, Orlando, Florida; three grandsons, David C. Woods, St. Louis, Missouri, Colin E. Woods, Kansas City, Missouri, Cameron R. Woods, Kansas City, Missouri; two granddaughters, Caroline E. Kaplan, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Alexandra M. Woods, Kansas City, Missouri; and two great-granddaughters, Amelia and Ava Kaplan of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Graveside Service
Graveside service with full military honors will be 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2010, at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
