Olathe

Sonia Audrey Marie Campbell, 75, of Olathe, Kansas passed away on Thursday, August 18th.

Sonia was born on July 17th 1947 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, the youngest of nine children, to Naomi and Granville Campbell. Hers was a large and close-knit family that always held her in love and support as she did for them.

Sonia was an extremely loving and devoted mother to her 2 Sons, Adrian Campbell. 49, and Paul Vassor, 40. She will be remembered as a loving grandmother, sister, aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews and a devoted friend.

Sonia migrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1958 at the age of 11 to join her mother and other siblings to enjoy greater opportunities for education and career. She graduated from Bushwick High School in 1965 and chose nursing as her career attending King’s County School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY with her lifelong friend, Daphne Ridley. After graduation she entered the US Air Force as a Nurse. Upon completion of her military service, she gave birth to her eldest son, Adrian and then went to work at King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY as a critical care nurse for 7 years.

She then worked at St. Mary’s hospital, also in Brooklyn, as Director of the Critical Care Unit there. She was known as a very talented and dedicated nurse, once receiving a Commendation for bringing information to light in the care of a patient that saved their life.

In 1982 she married Wesley Vassor and gave birth to her youngest son Paul. Upon her divorce in 1989 she moved her family to Lenexa, Kansas to afford her sons a better quality of life and greater educational opportunities. She enjoyed time here with her family, Mother, Naomi and sisters Nina and Yvonne and their families. She worked at Providence Hospital in Kansas City as a staff nurse from 1989 alongside her dear friend, Carol Stewart until her retirement in 2012.

Her son’s Adrian and Paul were, without doubt, the central focus, pride, and joy of her life.  She worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for them to attend college and excel in life.  She was filled with joy upon their marriages and the birth of each of her grandchildren (Amari, Tori, Ariana, Julian, and Aidan)

Sonia was also known to be very strong in her opinions…once she made up her mind, it was made up and she could not be convinced to do anything that she did not want to do.  Home decorating, reading, and gardening were among her favorite activities but her passions were driving and the ocean.  Sonia LOVED to drive!  Anyone that knows her, knows about her 1969 Mustang that was her passion and has likely heard one of many stories of her burning up the roads between the Midwest and NYC.  She was happiest on the shores of the ocean and seas where she like to spend as much time as possible.

Sonia is survived by her loving sons, Adrian and Paul, her loving sisters, Yvonne, Barbara, and Beverly.

The family extends their thanks and gratitude to the staff at Anthology of Olathe for their care of Sonia where she was a resident since 2016.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 2nd, 2022 at the Amos Family Funeral Home, followed by A Celebration of Life at 6:00 p.m., also at the funeral home.
