Steven Randall Culp, 60, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Steven was born on June 3, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas, to George and Viola Culp, and grew up in Shawnee, Kansas.
He began a successful 32 year career in law enforcement, training at prestigious facilities such as the FBI National Academy at Quantico, VA, the Harvard School of Business, and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville. Steve retired from the Kansas City Kansas Police Department in 2006 as Deputy Chief of Police when he was appointed to lead a newly established state law enforcement agency, the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training based in Wichita, Kansas. He led this agency as its first director for six years, leaving in 2012. Steve took pride in his work and professional accomplishments and was well-known and respected for his honesty and integrity.
The pride and joy Steve found in his career is surpassed only by the love he felt for his family including Linda (Renegar) Culp, his wife of 37 years, son Matthew Culp and wife Mandie, daughter Randi Culp Stewart and husband Will, and grandchildren Ryleigh and Dylan Stewart. He is survived by his loving sisters Emily Looney and husband Dave, Marlene Carrel and husband Bob, and Elyse Ohmes and husband Keith as well as his cherished nieces, nephew and many beloved cousins. Steve was preceded in death by his father George Culp, mother Viola (Befort) Culp, and brother George Culp.
Steve made friends easily and often, and he will be missed dearly.
To honor Steve and celebrate his life a visitation will be held at St. Joseph's Church, 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas, Thursday, November 13th from 5:00 - 8:00pm, with a Rosary beginning at 5:00. The funeral will be at St. Joseph's Church on Friday, November 14th at 10:00am. Interment will follow at the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Lenexa, Kansas.
