Our dear sister, Sue Ellen Martin, was born on March 25, 1958 at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas to Eunice Maxine (Philgreen) Martin and Gorby Ray Martin Sr. She grew up in Shawnee, Kansas, attending Flint Elementary School, (old) Shawnee Grade School, Hocker Grove Junior High School, and Shawnee Mission Northwest High School (class of 1976). Next, she attended Baker University; graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1980. Sue then earned another Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Dietetics and Institutional Management from Kansas State University in 1984. Upon receiving her Master’s, Sue was employed as the Head Registered Dietitian at the Atchison Hospital in Atchison, Kansas for 8 years. She then took a position with the Wyandotte County Health Department in the W.I.C. program; working there ever since. This move allowed her to enjoy her young nieces and nephews and be closer to her large extended family.
Sue had three older brothers and one younger brother. She was an avid cat lover and enjoyed travel. Sue visited England, France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Mexico, and all 50 of the United States. Other interests included cooking and baking (known for her wide array of amazing cookies) and especially all things related to her nieces and nephews.
Sue was a life long member of the Shawnee United Methodist Church; in the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority at Baker University; joined the Shawnee Mission chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and professionally was a member of the American Dietetic Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eunice Maxine (Philgreen) Martin and Dr. Gorby Ray Martin Sr.
Sue Ellen Martin leaves behind her four brothers: Gorby Ray Martin II of Shawnee, Dr. Steven Kaye Martin (& wife Kimberlee A. Martin) of Lenexa, Dr. Alan Jeffrey Martin (& wife Deborah L. Martin) of Shawnee, Dr. Philip Harry Martin (& wife Deborah O. Martin) of Lenexa. Also, her two nieces: Hillary LeeAnn Martin and Rebecca Michelle Martin, her three nephews: Jeffrey Alan Martin, Blake Steven Martin, and Alexander James Martin, along with many other extended family members and good friends. There are also her beloved kitties, Maxwell and Roxanne who gave her great joy and humor with their antics.
Sue was loved by many and leaves us too soon. We will miss her dearly and carry her in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be 12 - 1 p.m., Saturday, April 18 with funeral services immediately following at the Shawnee United Methodist Church, 10700 Johnson Dr., Shawnee. Burial will be in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.
