Thomas F. Nelson

d. May 12, 2014

Thomas F. Nelson (89) of Shawnee, Kansas passed away May 12, 2014. Tom was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was a veteran of WWII and was married to the love of his life, Nancy, for 62 years until her passing. He is survived by his daughters Janet Gilcrist (Terry) of Omaha and Kelly Poston (Greg) of Shawnee; grandchildren Betsy, Brenda, Brian, Brett, Kelsey and Courtney; and great grandchildren Tyler, Jake, Justin, Sydney, Bentley and Brodie. After his wife's death in 2008 Tom attended Overland Park Christian Church and was later baptized there. He quickly became very active in the church and made many special friends. He was also an active volunteer for Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Catch-a-ride and KU Medical Center Alzheimer's research until his death. In 2010 Tom was selected to go on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. It was an experience of a lifetime and he was surprised by the welcome all the veteransreceived wherever they went. Tom impacted the lives of everyone he met. Up until his death Tom lived on his ownwith his dog, Maggie, was driving, making people laugh, and sharp as a tack. He made friends everywhere he went and everyone always has a story about Tom. He was extremely proud of all of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Heaven gained an amazing man when the world lost one. He had a full life that he lived until the end. We are grateful for all of his many friends who shared his life. We take comfort in knowing he is reunited with his wife. Be sure to tell her hello for us.
