Velma Lea Cunningham, 91, of Overland Park, Kansas died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on the evening of July 21, 2022.
A visitation at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas 66203 will be from 6:00 -7:30 pm on Friday, July 29, 2022
Velma was born on May 28, 1931 to Howard and Dona (Johnson) White in Kansas City, Kansas. Her two older brothers and parents were thrilled with finally having a beautiful little girl, thus began the sparkle, which was Velma Lea.
As a member of Eastern Star with the encouragement of her husband Darvin she rose to the leadership position as Worthy Matron. Velma loved to dress up with lots of sparkle and glamor. She loved to dance and would dance the evening away at Shrine events or any other social gatherings.
Velma also loved to play golf and could be found with bedazzled clubs, gloves, visor, and sunglasses at the golf course. Some of her other pastimes were, fishing, crossword puzzles, daily devotions, and coloring her made for adults coloring books. She enjoyed playing the piano and listening to recordings of Floyd Crammer with him being one of her favorite pianist and in contrast also liked classic rock. Led Zeppelin topped her list of favorite rock groups.
Velma worked most of her life in retail/customer service, starting at Velvet Cream Popcorn, a business her parents started in 1939. She became an important part of her first husband’s business, as well as worked at the Diet Center, and the last 13 years as a cashier at CVS. She rarely went anywhere that she wasn’t recognized by a someone who knew her and appreciated her personal care.
Velma is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darvin Cunningham and her two brothers Donald White and Kenneth White.
Survivors include her two sons, John (Cathy) Jewell and Clinton (Laurie) Jewell; 6 grandchildren: Joanna Coen, Jonathan Jewell, Amy Morgan, Matt Jewell, Allen Wilson and Jesse Jewell, plus 9 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
