Virgil Henry Snell was born November 5th 1931 in Winfield, Kansas and resided in Lenexa, Kansas until he passed away December 15th, 2020.
He was preceded in death by daughters Cathi Maynard and Janice Schlichting, great granddaughter Lydia Moore, his parents Walter and Margaret Snell, brother Alfred Snell and sister Janet Hoheisel.
Virgil is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Jane Snell; Children: Mari Yearout (Mark), Lori Offutt (Monte), Rhonda Anawalt (DJ), Patricia Moore (Randy), and Walter Snell (Suzanne); Grandchildren: Conor Maynard, Mark Maynard, Margaret Schroeder, Andrea Stafford, Adam Mohr, Peter Mohr, Alex Mohr, Careece Rowden, Marissa Giordano, Charles Armour, Randie Schlichting, Kenneth Offutt, Andrew Offutt, Kayla Offutt, Mason Offutt, Garrett Offutt, Winston Anawalt, David Anawalt, Daniel Moore, Eric Moore, Blake Moore, Carson Moore, Andrew Cuthbert, Caroline Snell and Anthony Snell; 32 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren; Siblings: Wendell Snell and Karen Snell.
Virgil graduated from Winfield High School in 1949 and attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1954 with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering. He then served 2 yrs in the Air Force in Alaska, retiring as a 1st Ltn. In 1956, Virgil began his career with Black & Veatch Engineering in the Power Division as a Professional Engineer where he designed and oversaw the building of power plants across the US and around the world. He rose to Head of the Power Division and then on to Executive Partner before retiring in 1996. He held deep respect for his vocation, his fellow workers, and the many projects he accomplished throughout his distinguished career.
Virgil had a lifelong love of Kansas State University and mentored student engineers throughout his career. He was proud to have been inducted into the inaugural class of the Engineering Hall of Fame and named the 1989 Alumni Fellow in the College of Engineering at Kansas State University. Virgil was a devout husband and father, enjoying boating, water skiing, camping, snow skiing and vacationing with his family and friends. Throughout his life, he generously shared time and talent with the Church and Scouting. Growing up, he was active in Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He later served as Scout Master and on the Scout Committee for many years. After retiring, Virgil and Jane spent many happy summers at their 2nd home on Lake of the Ozarks, enjoying time with their family and spending time in his workshop turning wood and sharing his vast woodworking knowledge with others. He loved to read, work crossword puzzles and was dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of their homes. Virgil was an honest, hardworking, diligent, and generous man.
A private service was held at Resurrection Cemetery.
