Poem written by Virginia’s grandson Billy Brame
Hope: An Elegy The beauty of Hope is how she stands; Gently opposed to cynicism or despair In polka dots and pumps. Petite. Powerful. Against all of life's possibilities, to Hope is A revolutionary, radical act. She gardens with a trust in the coming future; Patiently she cultivates a peach tree. Hope is steadfast; an anchor With Lipstick and jewelry and grace. On a fence post, she sits, unafraid to impress. With humor and wisdom and confidence. Family is a Hope embodied She is the seventh of eight And brings the world eight of her own. The mystery and multiplicity of motherhood. The joyful hospitality Hope fashions From foods and fabric and conversation Around her home, she moves, surrounded By neighbors and strangers all welcomed We Christians are a people of Hope; Hymns on an organ in the living room Or outside under a brush arbor, Revivals are relentless optimism. All will be fulfilled at the eschaton, Resurrection awaits us there. Alongside Love and Faith is Hope; These three ultimately abide.
Hope will be laid to rest in a private graveside service in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Services will be livestreamed at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 19. To watch please click here.
