Virginia Ruth Walmer

Virginia Ruth Nichols Walmer, 88, of Leawood, KS, passed away April 12, 2015. She was born October 26, 1926, in Vinland, Kansas, to Clyde Eugene and Minnie Sarah Hoskinson Nichols. Her formal education was in one-room schoolhouses, at Vinland Rural High School, and in classes at Kansas University. After high school she worked at Evans Auto Supply in Lawrence, Kansas, where she met her future husband, Robert Gene Walmer. They were married April 10, 1949, in the Danforth Chapel on the campus of the University of Kansas. After Bob graduated from KU Law School in Lawrence, they moved to Herington, Kansas, where she worked for Beech Aircraft. Virginia was a housewife and mother during the childhoods of their three children. Later, she did temporary office work for many companies in Des Moines, Iowa, and in the Kansas City Metro area, before becoming the accountant for The Squire Publishing Company. After many years at The Squire, Virginia retired in 1984. In retirement she devoted her time to her grandchildren and to many hobbies, including genealogy, gardening, and travel. She wrote three books of family history, and volunteered in the Johnson County Central Library Genealogy department for many years. Virginia was an active member in the United Methodist Church after joining it in 1953. She was a member of Indian Heights United Methodist Church for the past 27 years, where she was to be honored later this month for her work as archivist. Virginia's husband Bob died a month ago on March 9, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her brother Warren Nichols, and her sisters Alta Nichols Chanay and Dorthy Nichols Kerns. She is survived by one sister, Rose Nichols Lawson of Baldwin City, KS; daughter Daphne Walmer and husband David Herreid of St. Paul, MN; daughter Colette Majerle and husband James Majerle of Leawood, KS; son David Walmer of Leawood, KS; grandson Matthew Majerle and wife Allie of Prairie Village, KS; granddaughter Alyssa Herreid Bowman and husband Jared Bowman of Seattle, WA; granddaughter Michelle Majerle and fiancé Andrew Hill of Prairie Village, KS; granddaughter Elena Herreid of St. Paul, MN; and great-granddaughters Sage and Margo.

Services

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Indian Heights United Methodist Church, 10211 Nall Ave, Overland Park, KS 66207.
