Walter C. Schmidt, 87, of Overland Park, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at Indian Creek Nursing Home. Walter was born July 26, 1924 to the late Casper and Sophie Schmidt in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He graduated from Central High School and attended the Universityof Denver.
Walter served with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II. He participated in the assault on Riva Ridge in Italy as well as seeing combat in the North Apennines, and Po Valley in Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions. After returning home from the service he married Margaret Betzle in Prairie Du Chein on February 15, 1947.
Walter worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as an office manager for over 40 years. He was a proud member of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division. Walter was also active with the Seratoma Club and Traffic Club before he retired in 1984.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, of almost 65 years; his two daughters, Marjorie McGuire and husband Larry; Nancy Roos and husband Paul; three grandsons, Michael McGuire and wife Amy; David McGuire; and Matthew Roos; three brothers, Herbert Schmidt and wife Lucille; Rudy Schmidt, and Edward Schmidt.
Services and Contributions
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 10 at Price of Peace Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed prior to mass. Burial with military honors will follow at ResurrectionCemeteryin Lenexa. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association-Heart of America Chapter; 3846 W. 75th St; Prairie Village, KS 66208.
