Warren R. “Mike” Jones

January 29, 1933 — February 13, 2019

Warren R. "Mike" Jones, 86, of Overland Park, KS passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Mike was born January 29, 1933 to the late Warren and Virginia Jones in Wichita, Kansas.  He graduated from Wichita East High School in 1951 where he met his wife Maxine Welch in Spanish class.  They were married on January 16, 1954.  After high school, Mike earned a bachelor's degree in Geology from Wichita University Municipal School in 1955.  He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1958. While he was in the Air Force, he learned to fly single engine aircraft, one of which served as a classroom for training navigators.

In 1959 he started his long career in Agri-Business Insurance as a Field Representative with Mill Mutual Insurance Company.  Warren retired as the Southwest Regional Manager from Grain Dealers Insurance in 1998 after 39 years of service.  Mike was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he dedicated his time to helping those less fortunate.  He served on the Church Vestry as Senior Warden, Facilities and Grounds and helped with the Family Outreach.  Mike was key in starting the Agape Fund that helped his fellow parishioners experiencing financial hardship. Maxine and Mike both enjoyed volunteering for The Helping Hand screening applications.  An avid gardener, Mike could also be found toiling away in the church's community garden during the growing season.    He also served for many years as an usher on Sunday mornings.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Maxine; two daughters, Susan Thomas and husband Chuck; Judy Fogleman and husband Dave; two sons, Tim Jones and wife Clareen; Terry Jones and wife Ralinn; a sister, Pat Bower and husband Rex; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation and Services

Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, February 23, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 5325 Nieman Rd., Shawnee, KS.  A celebration of Mike's life will follow the visitation at 2 p.m. at the church.
