Wendell A. "Windy" Elliott, 90, of Overland Park, KS passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 at The Gables at Overland Park.
Windy was born February 10, 1928 to the late George and Thelma Elliott in Taft, California. Windy joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Fireman 1st Class in the Pacific during World War II. He later joined the American Legion Post #1 in Paris, France. Shortly after returning from the Navy, Windy married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny" Davis, on December 16, 1950. Windy turned a lifelong fascination with flying into an aviation career first as a mechanic with American Airlines, and then as a crew member with TWA. He retired in 1987 after 32 years of service. His career provided him the opportunity to fly both domestic and international routes on Connies, 707's, 727's, 747's and L-1011's. He also enjoyed flying his own Cessna 180 around the country.
Windy was a devoted father who volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader and Little League Coach. He was an active member of Monticello United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee for several years. Windy served on the Monticello Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue for the entire history of the department. After the Monticello Historical Society relocated to the Floyd Cline Hall, he volunteered to share the history of the old firehouse and history of Monticello Township as well as restoring and maintaining the fire trucks and displaying them in local parades and events. He was also actively involved in forming Water District #3 in rural Johnson County. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, dancing, archery, hunting, fishing, golf, taking family cruises, working on engines, and building electronic devices. Windy was also a Charter member of the Shawnee Golf and Country Club where he enjoyed many rounds of golf.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ginny, on November 1, 2016. He is survived by his loving children: two sons, Rev. Roger (Lorene) Elliott, Beloit, WI and Paul (Glenda) Elliott, Shawnee, KS; and two daughters, Sherry (Phil) Davis, Kearney, MO and Cyndi (Kyle) Boetel, Aurora, CO. He is also survived by a sister, Lucille Miller and niece, Dee Barnett of Waco, KY; ten grandchildren, Heather (Michael) Curtis, Crystal (Kevin) Marquette, Christina (Corey) Breaux, William Davis, Leah Davis, Colin Orand, Chelsea Bledsoe, Caleb Bledsoe, Carena Bledsoe, and Creighton Bledsoe; eight great grandchildren, Gabriel Curtis, Maddy Curtis, Caleb Curtis, Charis Marquette, Alex Marquette, Kyleigh Higgins, Leelah Breaux, and James Breaux.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at the Amos Family Funeral Home in Shawnee. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 24 at Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS 66226. Burial will follow in Old Monticello Cemetery in Shawnee, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
