William George Dexter

July 23, 1933 — October 22, 2021

William G. Dexter of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on October 22, 2021.

Bill was born July 23, 1933 in Atkinson, Nebraska, the son of William Paul Dexter and Henrietta (Ries) Dexter.

On September 21, 1957, he and Nancy Ann Martin married in El Dorado, Kansas. They became the parents of four children: Stuart, Stephen, Susan, and Sharon.

Growing up, his family moved regularly because his father was the foreman of a highway construction crew and it was not unusual for Bill and his sisters, Geraldine and Patricia, to attend 3 or 4 different schools in a semester. However, Bill spent his high school years in Atkinson, Nebraska where he became a star athlete in basketball, baseball, and track at St. Joseph High School – winning a state championship in the 400m relay and starting three years for the varsity basketball team. After high school he attended Creighton University on a basketball scholarship then enlisted in the military where he served in a MASH unit during the Korean War. After returning, he married Nancy and attended the University of Nebraska.

Following graduation, Bill was hired by the First National Bank of Kansas City where he worked for 19 years and eventually rose to Executive Vice President. He left First National Bank to become President of Mission State Bank and later served as President of Boatmen’s Raytown Bank before finishing his career as CFO of USA 800, Inc. Throughout his distinguished career, Bill was active in civic and community organizations and served as President for, among others, the Greater Kansas City American Cancer Society, Rotary Club, and the Kansas City Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He also found time to coach his sons’ baseball, basketball, and football teams.

When not working, Bill enjoyed fishing, camping, grilling, cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers and was an avid reader and amazing storyteller. More than anything, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves Nancy, his loving wife of more than 64 years, Susan and her children Sam and Lily, Sharon and Ken and their children Abbey, Leah, Sarah, Maureen, Graham, and Caroline, Stuart and Lynne and their children Andrew, Alexander and Samantha, and Steve and Theresa and their kids Max, Norton and Quinn.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at the Amos Funeral Home 10:00 a.m. Saturday November 20, 2021.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska 68508 or at www.arborday.org.
