William “Bill” Howard

d. July 4, 1944

William (Bill) Lewis Howard, Ed. D., was born in Larned, Kansas, to Letha Muriel Burnett (1901) and Carl Lewis Howard (1893). His family eventually moved to Emporia, Kansas where he later met and married Shirley Ann Gard on July 4, 1944.

Bill studied education at Emporia State College, University of Colorado and the University of Kansas. He earned his doctorate of education in 1980. Throughout Kansas for forty-one years, he was employed in a variety of positions, including teacher, coach, principal, college professor and superintendent. He affiliated with many education and philanthropic organizations.

Bill served as a pilot and flight instructor during WWII. He was honorable discharged as a First Lieutenant Pilot in 1945.

Bill was a sportsman. He enjoyed basketball, golfing, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Bill and Shirley enjoyed traveling to foreign countries, particularly Switzerland. Bill also traveled to Africa and Taiwan to work with overseas schools.

Bill is survived by his daughter Christine Broers, brother Robert Howard, 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His wife and son William Gard Howard are deceased.

At a date to be determined, a celebration of life will be held at the Village Presbyterian in Prairie Village, Kansas, where his ashes will be interred.

Memorials may be given to the Village Presbyterian Church or the World War I Museum in Kansas City, Missouri.
