Winifred “Winnie” Jean Steinmetz

February 24, 1927 — February 26, 2018

Winifred Jean Steinmetz, 91, went home to be with the Lord February 26, 2018. Winnie was born Feb. 24, 1927 in Kansas City, KS to Nathan and Eugenia Shipley and spent her childhood in Paola and Shawnee. She graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High School in 1944. Winnie married the love of her life, George J. Steinmetz, Jr. on July 29, 1948. She was a member of Merriam/Woodson Ave. Bible Church for over 50 years. She was active in Children's Ministries, Women's Missionary Society and was a discussion leader for Bible Study Fellowship. She most recently attended First Baptist Church of Shawnee. She was actively involved in her children's activities and served as Cub Scout Den Mother as well as room mother, baseball scorekeeper and always welcoming all her children's friends into their home. Winnie worked at United Telecom/Sprint as an Executive Secretary for 15 years. Winnie was a remarkable and loving wife, mother, sister, mother-in-law, aunt and grandmother. Winnie was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Shipley and her grandson, Ryan Crow. Winnie is survived by her husband of 69 years, George, her children, Nancy (Jerry) Lovins, David, Larry, and John (Jennie), her brother Joe (Carole) Shipley and grandchildren, Lauren (Sean) VanLiew, Kayte, Samantha, John Jr. and George III.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 1st, 2018 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS 66203.  A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 pm.
