Gurbachan (Gur) Singh Ranhotra was born in Abbottabad, a city in the frontier province of then undivided India on August 8th, 1935. Upon the partition of India, his father moved their extended family to Gorakhpur in the Uttar Pradesh province of India. Gur received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from major institutions in Uttar Pradesh.
On May 27th, 1960, Gur married Tejinder (Tej) and they moved to the US shortly thereafter, for his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. It was there in Minneapolis, MN that they
welcomed their first child, Gurdeep (Rick). His career included post-doctoral work at the University of Illinois, an associate professorship at Punjab Ag University in India, research at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center Foundation and research with the American Institute of Baking (AIB), in Chicago, IL where their daughter, Anita, was born. AIB then moved to Manhattan, KS in 1976, so Gur and his family moved with the company. While working as the Director of Nutrition Research at AIB, he was also an adjunct full professor in Food and Nutrition at Kansas State University.
After 32 years with the AIB, Gur retired with Tej to Las Vegas, NV for a few years and then returned to the Midwest and made their home in Shawnee, KS. In his retirement, Gur rediscovered an interest in oil
painting and enjoyed spending his time painting scenery and portraits. Many visitors in his final days were gifted one of his paintings.
Gur is survived by his wife of 63 years, Tej; son Rick (Kiran); daughter, Anita; granddaughter, Tara; and great-granddaughter, Amelia. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Amar.
Services will be held at Amos Family Funeral Home at 10901 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, KS 66203 on Tuesday, June 6th.
