Jack Gilbert Hammig

September 12, 1933 — February 25, 2022

Jack Gilbert Hammig, 88, passed away Friday, February 25th at his home in Overland Park, KS.  Jack was born September 12, 1933 to Leslie and Marcella (Gilbert) Hammig in Lawrence, KS, the oldest of three children. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1950.

Jack attended the University of Kansas and was on KU’s Varsity Gymnastics team. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Germany. At the first opportunity to take leave from military duty, he married his beautiful bride and wife of 62 years, Geraldine (Jeri) Trovillion, in Lawrence, KS in 1956.

Jack began his lifetime career in public education in Clearwater, KS.  After a year there, he accepted a teaching position at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, KS where he taught physical education and coached football and track & field. Later, beginning in the early 1970’s and continuing until the end of his career, Jack served as the Director of Athletics and Facilities for the Shawnee Mission School District. Jack enjoyed spending time with his family, imparting humorous wisdom about life, and promoting aerobic exercise...he was also an avid runner. During his retirement he taught classes at the Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS.

Jack is survived by his sons, Bryant (Donna) of Wausau, WI and Bart (Heather) and grandchildren Ted and Danielle, of Fayetteville, AR; sisters Martha (Dick) Patterson of Topeka, KS and Mary Hammig of Overland Park, KS.  He is preceded in death by wife Jeri, son Bret, and parents Leslie and Marcella.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 4th, 2022 at Overland Park Lutheran Church located at 7810 W. 79th St. at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bret G. Hammig Exercise Physiology Honor Award through the KU Endowment Association. Instructions can be found at kuendowment.org.
